Wedges are used for a variety of short distance, high altitude and high accuracy shots such as when hitting the ball onto the green. Wedges are also used for hitting the ball out of hazards or from the rough. Wedges are just irons with loft higher than a 9 iron, which is typically at about 42 degrees.
There are six types of wedges: Pitching wedge, gap wedge, sand wedge, lob wedge and ultra lob wedge. Each of these has a distinct purpose with degree of angles all different from each other.
