Hybrids are named because they combine qualities of a wood and an iron. Hybrids enable the player with better long distance shots with an iron's familiar swing. These type of clubs are generally used instead of high numbered woods and/or low numbered irons as they add distance and forgiveness for the golfer.
Most hybrids can actually compltely replace an iron since they are typically easir to hit than its respective iron.
